Competent Crew

This course is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers.

 

By the end of the course the student should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, steer a dinghy and assist in all the day to day duties on board.

 

There are no pre requisites for this certification and the student does not need to have any prior sailing knowledge or experience.

 

The course content includes:

  • Rigging and sails
  • Sail handling
  • Knots
  • Fire precautions and fighting
  • Personal safety equipment
  • Man overboard
  • Emergency equipment
  • Meteorology
  • Seasickness
  • Helmsman ship
  • General duties
  • Manners and customs
  • Rules of the road
  • Dinghies

There are two components to the course:

1.  Shore Based Component

This can be completed by at home study by working through the  Competent Crew Manual and completing the exercises at the end of each module.

 

The minimum time required is 20 hours.

 

2.  Practical - On the Water

20 hours on the water if the shore based component is completed or 40 hours on the water to complete both Shore based and ‘on the water' practical.
